How does this domain check work?

This tool connects directly to the official WHOIS server for each domain's registry (the same servers registrars query) and asks whether the name is registered - the same real-time lookup you'd get by using the whois command yourself.

If a WHOIS server can't be reached (some web hosts block the WHOIS port, 43, by firewall), the tool falls back to checking whether the domain has any DNS records - a domain with no DNS presence is often, but not always, unregistered, so this fallback result is labeled "likely" rather than confirmed.

Because domain registration changes constantly, always do a final check directly with a registrar before completing a purchase.
